'Underwater Blinds' Against Piling Noise at Sea

News |

Van Oord, TNO, and Adbm Technologies have developed 'underwater blinds' with support of the TKI Wind op Zee to reduce noise when installing wind turbines.

Dutch installation company Van Oord, knowledge institute TNO and American company Adbm Technologies worked together in a consortium on an innovative noise mitigation system for installing offshore wind turbines.

On 1 May 2019 Van Oord announced that the research project was successful and that the technology will be used in constructing the Borssele wind farm 3, 4, and 5. This news was picked up by newspaper the Financieele Dagblad on 2 May 2019.

The system reduces underwater noise during piling wind turbines foundations by combining the blinds-like design and a curtain of bubbles that block certain sound frequencies. This benefits the surrounding ecology.
